Ivan Southall was one of the best authors for children and young people perhaps the best that I have ever read His stories were exciting and entertaining yes But they were also of real substance superbly crafted to make the reader think while being entertained His stories uietly explored social conscience personality and behaviour regret and responsibility adversity and hope and at a time when very few authors were doing this for young readers His characters experienced exciting and terrifying adventures while themselves being ordinary children and teens with ordinary strengths and flaws of characterThis particular novel I used to love as a child of ten or eleven It wasn t my favourite of Southall s elements trilogy that honour was reserved for Hill s End followed closely by Ash Road with To the Wild Sky trailing a little further behind That said it still held the frightening yet slightly exciting romance of a world suddenly bereft of food shelter and help and no adults to assume comforting responsibility I wondered if I would find it the same on re reading it as an adult I did and I didn t It wasn t as meaty as it seemed as a younger reader but it was nonetheless a tightly written well constructed and appealing story for its target audience and still had the capacity to draw some of that uesting wonder from an adult What Mr Southall did exceptionally well I think was to explore and have his readers explore young people responding to significant trial and adversity His characters could swing from amazing heroics to spitting the dummy and that was okayAfter noteI loved the ending of To the Wild Sky I love that the author uite deliberately didn t neatly wrap everything up and tidy away the loose ends but left plenty of material for the reader to speculate I just discovered recently however that Ivan Southall did eventually cave to the relentless reuests for a seuel He was apparently very reluctant but eventually gave in almost twenty years later I ve decided I m going to read it I ll be very interested to see if his original instincts to leave it alone were correct
