Daba's Travels from Ouadda to Bangui characters æ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB Daba was born in Ouadda in what is now the Central African Republic His mother often told him about the terrible dry season that year when elephants buffaloes and antelopes stampeded through the countryside in a frenzied search for water Even panthers stalked the bush around the village often carrying innocent sheep Safe near his paren. Daba s Travels is a happy tale of a little boy named Daba who gets a chance to leave his village in north central Central African Republic with a neighbor s family that s going on a vacation to the father s home village Daba s family arranged for him to study at a boarding school after the trip so he stays on after the neighbor s family goes home As time goes on Daba makes new friends and keeps finding opportunities to travel further he excels at school and gets chances to study elsewhere Through this luck and hard work and general carpe diem readers get to follow Daba across CAR as he integrates into rural villages and bustling central market towns Daba gets to join friends on hunts and hikes He participates as an insider outsider in festivals and religious ceremonies welcome to join but new so we get to learn alongside him Daba and his crew of schoolboys are at that age where they re old enough to run around alone but still following along and figuring it all out trying to be tough but happy to huddle together when things get a little scarySo I live in the Central African Republic as an aid worker and I found this story sweet but kind of boring It was a joy to read something about CAR and its culture instead of CAR and its politics but it s still just a slow moving children s novel My partner and my mom on the other hand both snagged it out of my bag during long days hanging around and at the beach respectively during my most recent RR They devoured the majority of the book in a couple hours Lots of details said my partner It really paints a picture said MaThe story takes you from semi arid northeast CAR to southeastern Bangui in the Congo rainforest basin Read with a map at hand Google image search village names for climate and ecology as you move along the voyage to really see what Daba sees Makomb Bambot is Central African and the book is semi autobiographical of his formal and informal educations It was written in post independence 1970s but the general practices in rural CAR travel family structures hunting methods w fire spears education hygiene food drumming dance coming of age rituals etc seem pretty similar today as far as I can tell from my vantage point living working in a rural market town though I m no integrated PCV or anthropologist so I make no claims to foreign expertise
