My apologies for uoting from fellow art fans who have made at least three observations I myself haveUnfortunately I fall into the category of those who are never going to be able to leave this country Getting to the Louve would be impossible and it probably takes at least a week to sit and study the work you wish to study Although this wheelchair can be a bonus Secondly you have to take into consideration the week you have just spent finding the damn paintings you want to see I am not insinuating buying this book is better than going into the Louve but at the very very leastthis can be an invaluable guide The book will tell you the floor and also the room your painting are so buy it first before you set out to france and take notes on where it is you wish to go This book is probably one of the most beautiful things I have ever seenOne evening With the book on the desk I wanted a closer look at the detail of a piece of work I bent the lamp over onto the book The painting actually looked bloody wet as if it had just been finished Yes some of the art looked a little rough around the edges but so would you if you had been around since the 14th CenturyAs some people have noted on other very large books with hundreds of pages it would of been sensible to put a Marker Ribbon for those who don t want to put bookmarks in the bookSecondly someone made the comment that one of the Taschen books was worth at least 100 I believe that this is well worth that very priceNow the down side well a little downer The book comes with a CD ROMWell for many of us you would be better off using that as the damn bookmarkconsidering there are many of us who cannot get it to run all I can get is the introduction plus index I truly and foolishly believed in my fellow man That those who did NOT have a problem making it work would tell us what computer they where using it s specifications and the model Plus any of you who At First could not get it to work and found a fixORWhoever made the disc could fix it because funnily enough the disc enclosed with the Vatican Taschen does not work on our computers eitherHowever this is NOT enough of a problem for me to only give it 4 starsYou can also get beautiful metal paper thin Bookmarks that will complement your book Alsofrom

What can we say about the Louvre it contains some of the greatest works of art in human history Having had the great fortune of viewing uite a number of these paintings firsthand in the Louvre I was extremely pleased to see that ALL the paintings in this grand treasure trove were finally released The main reason being that I had seen works there that never seemed to appear in other art books and memories alone cannot restore the original in detail in the mind s eye hence it cannot satiate one s various reasons for being drawn to a particular work be it for its aesthetic charm psychological impact creativity color scheme composition etc One such work was The Young Martyr by Paul DelarocheHowever that example brings to light the main drawback of this ambitious volume The image is sadly minuscule as are the majority of artworks reproduced I cannot fault the publisher too harshly however for these reasons First the huge number of works that the Louvre contains cannot be presented in one volume any other way Second if they did make this a multi volume edition it would have been too expensive for many people Third making this single volume gives people who never had or will have the chance to visit the Louvre a complete representation of their art treasures all at a very reasonable price Fourth many art books aimed at the broad public have extremely poor color reproductions some being an absolute insult to the artist and the art world And while this edition does not boast the highest uality available it nevertheless is good especially considering the amount of works presented in this massive volumeBeing an artistauthor myself I find the ability to open this book in the comfort of a favorite chair or sofa a great relief sparing my eyes from the glare of a computer screen This again brings to light another issue namely that of the accompanying DVD The images are likewise minuscule and not worth the effort or strainNevertheless the robust catalog that this edition boasts affords the professional or layman the ability to study lesser known artists and their works thus broadening one s knowledge and clarifying one s vision about the exchange of ideas from artist to artist or from one school to another and acuiring a better understanding of the chronological timeline of how tastes influences and priorities changeAs such despite its flaws for the price it is a great addition to my library and a book that anyone can pick up to gain pleasure from or be inspired by one of the small images within to research an artist further elsewhere But the wealth of artistic genius within this hefty tome is worth the sacrifices as such it is highly recommended for art lovers or art students interested in art history
